beautiful-shinigami's CG tut by mmmaoh beautiful-shinigami's CG tut by mmmaoh
hi!

Just as requested: an openCanvas CG tutorial by me!

This is especially made for openCanvas 4.5 or something around there. I hope it'll work for some previous versions of OC. The tools/gadgets may be different, but they all have the watercolor brush and airbrush so... O_O

It may be hard to understand because tutorials are hard to make.

And, also, I am still practicing my style. This is just how I color, and there are many many other different ways. It's best if you experiment around and find your own style ;P

:bulletred: I've also attached an openCanvas event file of how I color the skin and eyes. If you think that'd help you more, then by all means, please download it on here. ^_^
(since it's an .oe4 file, it'll only work on openCanvas 4, i believe) :bulletred:

I hope it helps you CG on openCanvas!
It may not have as many tools as photoshop, but it's still pretty good. ^_^

If you have any questions, please ask!

::EDIT: 9/14/11::
WTH?! THIS OLD PIECE OF WORK (3 yrs old) RECEIVED A DAILY DEVIATION?!!!! :omg:

Thanks so much everyone!! I really appreciate it a lot!
But, gosh... why this one...?? =_= I don't even draw nor color like this anymore~~~ :'(
In fact, I had recently wanted to create a new (and better) CG tutorial for Paint Tool Sai for everyone to see, since that's what I use now and my skills have improved since this one.... aahhh.... -_-

Well. My copy of oC won't do any of that...
So I'd like to say
This tutorial also applies to Photoshop CS5 pretty well.

Please forgive my ignorance... but what do you mean when you use the term "Shinigami"?

"Shinigami" in Japanese means "God of Death".

"Shini" is a dirivitive of "Shinu" which means "to die" It works as if it was an adjective of "gami" - which itself came from "kami" and means "God." Not the God we think of in the States, but in Japan they think of separate gods controlling different components of existence. For example "Bimbogami" is the "God of the Poor". "Fukugami" is the the "God of Happiness / Richness / Goodwill", and of course what I am discussing "Shinigami" the "God of Death".

Are you using "Shinigami" in the context that you want?

I'm sorry, I'm not trying to bother you... I'm just a bit confused. Thx! =)

Hi! It's really okay so don't worry about it ^^
I am clearly aware of the meaning of "shinigami," however, at the moment when I wanted a deviantART (which was like, a minute after my friend showed me the site, and I was 15) I needed a username and had a huge crush on an anime character who was a pretty boy and a shinigami. Thus, I came up with the name "beautiful shinigami" on the spot. So, basically, I didn't put much thought into my name when I created it (I just wanted to join dA) :XD:
Also at that moment, I never would have guessed that I would be stuck with the name for life... (since it's my 'artist' name now) T__T LOLLL
Hope that helps xDDD

While this is a thorough and well done tutorial, there are few things I'll point out about the coloring itself.

One, where's your lightsource? Shading just nilly willy makes the art look well....Not nearly as good as it could. In fact it never makes the art look good..
Two, you may want to desaturate the colors a tad, and throw in more reds. Skin isn't just one color that darkens, nor is it so hypersaturated.
Three, you may want to add some softer shading to the hair in places, and sharper shading in places everywhere else, or it just looks like the hair was cut and pasted from another picture.

Though I do like the way you color eyes, as well as lips C:
